Short History of Ramakrishna Mission, Srinagar
Kashmir has been famed as a land of beauty and culture from time immemorial. Forming the northern part of India, it occupies a most important place in the geopolitical map of India. It may be mentioned in this context that Swami Vivekananda, the patriot saint of India, visited Kashmir twice. In a letter to his Irish Disciple Sister Nivedita dated 1st October 1897 Swamiji wrote:
I shall not describe Kashmir to you. Suffice it to say, I never felt sorry to leave any country except this paradise on earth; and I am trying my best if I can influence the Raja in starting a Center. So much to do here and the material is so helpful.
A group of young men inspired and influenced by Ramakrishna-Vivekananda ideology, established a small Center under the name Sri Ramakrishna Ashrama in the city of Srinagar, Kashmi in the year 1955 to spread the Universal Message of Sri Ramakrishna. Gradually more area was added and the religious and philanthropic services conducted by the Ashrama started drawing more and more people into the fold. Visits of senior monks like Swami Vireswaranandaji, Swami Abhayanandaji, Swami Bhuteshanandaji, Swami Ranganathanandaji and others were guiding force for all and had a lasting impact on the Center. As a result, the associated youth, under the leadership of B.N.Kaul continued their dedicated services to the public for more than two decades in spite of turbulent situation in Kashmir. During the March 2008 the Center was made a branch Center of Ramakrishna Mission.
